was born in Rome, Italy, in 1931. He graduated ‘cum laude’ in Electrical Engineering at “La Sapienza” University of Rome in 1956. Since 1956, he has been with the same university, where he was engaged in teaching and research activities; since 1967 he has been full professor at “La Sapienza” University of Rome of ‘Microwaves’ and later of ‘Electromagnetic Fields’. At present he is also Director of the PhD course in ‘Electromagnetics’. His primary interests are in the propagation of electromagnetic waves in anisotropic media, in microwave hyperthermia for cancer therapy, in the analysis and design of microwave and millimeter-wave devices, and in the additional electromagnetic heating of a thermonuclear plasma for controlled fusion. Prof. Gerosa is the Italian Official Member of Commission B (Fields and Waves) of URSI; he is also member of AEI (Electrical and Electronic Italian Association) and of SIMAI (Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics) and Life Associate Member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers).

Paolo Lampariello

was born in Rome, Italy, on May 17, 1944. He obtained Laurea degree ‘cum laude’ in Electronic Engineering at “La Sapienza” University of Rome, Rome, Italy in 1971. In 1971 he joined the Institute of Electronics, University of Rome, where he was Assistant Professor of ‘Electromagnetic Fields’. Since 1976 he has been engaged in educational activities involving electromagnetic field theory. He was made Professor of ‘Electromagnetic Fields’ in 1986. From November 1988 to October 1994 he served as Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering of “La Sapienza” University of Rome. Since November 1993 he is the President of the Council for Electronic Engineering Curriculum of “La Sapienza” University of Rome. Since September 1995 he is the President of the Center Interdepartmental for Scientific Computing of “La Sapienza” University of Rome. From September 1980 to August 1981 he was a NATO post-doctoral research fellow at the Polytechnic Institute of New York, Brooklyn.
Prof. Lampariello has been engaged in research in a wide variety of topics in the microwave field, including electromagnetic and elastic wave propagation in anisotropic media, thermal effects of electromagnetic waves, network representations of microwave structures, guided-wave theory with stress on surface waves and leaky waves, traveling-wave antennas, phased arrays, and, more recently, guiding and radiating structures for the millimeter and near-millimeter wave ranges.
Prof. Lampariello is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a Member of the Associazione Elettrotecnica ed Elettronica Italiana (AEI). He is a past Chairman of the Central and South Italy Section of the IEEE and a past Chairman of the Microwave Theory and Techniques/Antennas Propagation Societies Joint Chapter of the same Section. Presently he is the President of the Specialist Group ‘Electromagnetics’ of the AEI.

Fabrizio Frezza

was born in Rome, Italy, on October 31, 1960. He studied at “La Sapienza” University of Rome, Italy, where he received the Laurea degree ‘cum laude’ in Electronic Engineering fromin 1986 and the doctorate in Applied Electromagnetics in 1991. In 1986, he joined the Department of Electronic Engineering of the same University, where he has been Researcher from 1990 to 1998, Temporary Professor of ‘Electromagnetics’ from 1994 to 1998, and Associate Professor of ‘Electromagnetic Fields’ from 1994 to 1998, Associate Professor from 1998 to 2004, and Full Professor since 2005. His main research activity has concerned guiding structures, antennas, and resonators for microwaves and millimeter waves, numerical methods, scattering, optical propagation, plasma heating, and anisotropic media. Fabrizio Frezza is a Senior Member of IEEE, and a Member of Sigma Xi.

Alessandro Galli

received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering and the PhD degree in Applied Electromagnetics from “La Sapienza” University of Rome, Italy, in 1990 and 1994, respectively. In 1990 he joined the Electronic Engineering Department of the same university for his research activity. He became Assistant Professor in 2000 and Associate Professor in 2002 at “La Sapienza” University of Rome, where he is currently teaching ‘Electromagnetic Fields’ for Telecommunications Engineering. His scientific interests mainly involve electromagnetic theory and applications, particularly regarding analysis and design of passive devices and antennas (dielectric and anisotropic waveguides and resonators, leaky-wave antennas, etc.) for microwaves and millimeter waves. He is also active in bioelectromagnetics (modeling of interaction mechanisms with living matter, health safety problems for low-frequency applications and mobile communications, etc.). In 1994 and 1995, Prof. Galli received the Quality Presentation Recognition Award by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society.

Paolo Baccarelli

received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering and the PhD degree in Applied Electromagnetics from “La Sapienza” University of Rome, Rome, Italy, in 1996 and 2000, respectively.
In 1996, he joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, “La Sapienza” University of Rome. From April 1999 to October 1999, he was at the University of Houston, Houston, TX, as a visiting scholar. His research interests concern analysis and design of uniform and periodic planar leaky-wave antennas, numerical methods, and theoretical studies on leaky waves in anisotropic media.

Paolo Burghignoli

was born in Rome, Italy, on February 18, 1973. He received the Laurea degree ‘cum laude’ in Electronic Engineering from “La Sapienza” University of Rome, Rome, Italy, in 1997, and the PhD degree in Applied Electromagnetics in 2001 from the same university. In 1997, he joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, University of Rome, “La Sapienza,” where he is currently an Associate Researcher. From January 2004 to July 2004, he was a Visiting Research Assistant Professor at the University of Houston, Houston, TX.
His current research interests include analysis and design of planar leaky-wave antennas, numerical methods for the analysis of passive guiding and radiating microwave structures, periodic structures, and propagation and radiation in metamaterials.
Dr. Burghignoli received the Graduate Fellowship Award from the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society in 2003, the Raj Mittra Travel Grant for Junior Researchers at the Antennas and Propagation Symposium, Washington, DC, in 2005, and the “Giorgio Barzilai” Laurea Prize from the former IEEE Central and South Italy Section in 2007.

Giampiero Lovat

was born in Rome, Italy, on May 31, 1975. He received the Laurea degree ‘cum laude’ in electronic engineering and the PhD degree in Applied Electromagnetics from “La Sapienza” University of Rome, Rome, Italy, in 2001 and 2005, respectively. In 2005, he joined the Electrical Engineering Department, “La Sapienza” University of Rome, where he is currently an Associate Researcher. From January 2004 to July 2004, he was a Visiting Scholar with the University of Houston, Houston, TX.
His present research interests include leaky waves, general theory and numerical methods for the analysis of periodic structures, complex media, and electromagnetic shielding.
Dr. Lovat was the recipient of one of the Young Scientist Award at the URSI General Assembly 2005 in New Delhi, India.

Walter Arrighetti

was born in 1978. He received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering from “La Sapienza” University of Rome in 2002. On november 2003 he won a studentship for the ‘Electromagnetics’ PhD c/o the same university.
His primary research interests involve mathematical methods for electromagnetics and classical electrodynamics, derived from functional analysis, differential geometry, algebraic topology, and chaos’ theory (e.g. Topological/simplicial Calculus). Other scientific interests include: complex dynamical systems, quantum field theory, quantum dots’/gates’ theory, statistical mechanics, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), cellular automata, computer microarchitectures, digital photography and image processing, and audio synthesis systems.
He was selected by the 2005 Altran Engineering Academy as the Italian finalist for a 6-months placement with the Renault.F1 Team in Enstone (UK).

Simone Paulotto

received the "Laurea" degree (cum laude and honorable mention) in electronic engineering and the Ph.D. degree in applied electromagnetics from "La Sapienza" University of Rome, Rome, Italy, in 2002 and 2006, respectively. In 2002, he joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, "La Sapienza" University of Rome, where he is currently an Associate Researcher.
From November 2004 to April 2005, he was a Visiting Scholar with the University of Houston, Houston, TX.
His scientific interests include analysis and design of planar leaky-wave antennas, guidance and radiation phenomena in metamaterial structures, periodic structures, scattering theory, and electromagnetic characterization of materials.
Dr. Paulotto was the recipient of the "M. Sannino" prize for the best paper at the National Italian Congress of Electromagnetism (XVIth RiNEm) in 2006, and a Young Scientist Award presented by the XXIXth URSI General Assembly, Chicago, IL, in 2008.

Paolo Nocito

after earning the International Baccalaureate diploma, received the Laurea degree in electronic engineering from "Sapienza" University of Rome, Rome, Italy, in 2004.
He attended the Telecommunications Superior Specialization School at the Ministry of Communication, Rome, Italy, obtaining the Specialization in Telecommunications in 2005 and, then, joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, "Sapienza" University of Rome, as a Doctoral Student, now at the 3rd year.
His main research interests are in electromagnetic analysis and synthesis of antennas for microwaves and millimeter waves, periodic structures, and numerical methods. He worked as informative system designer and he is now a consultant for Selex Communications, providing technical support to the study, design, and realization of high efficiency power modulators.

Guido Valerio

was born on May 29, 1982. He received the first level Laurea degree cum laude in Telecommunication Engineering in 2003, and the Laura degree cum laude and honourable mention in Electronic Engineering in 2005, both from “La Sapienza” University of Rome.
In 2005 he joined the Electronic Engineering Department of the same university, where he is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree in applied electromagnetics, under the tutoring of prof. Alessandro Galli. From February 2008 he is a Visiting Scholar with the University of Houston, Houston, TX.
His scientific interests mainly involve numerical methods in periodic structures, specifically the efficient computation of Green’s functions in different kinds of periodic structures and the formulation of integral-equation-based methods. Other topics of interest are the design of harmonic-tuneable radiators for active-antennas applications, involving both microstrip patch antennas and Dielectric Resonator Antennas (DRAs), and the analysis and design of notched DRAs to enhance bandwidth performances.
